Internal Jugular Vein Flebectasia In Child: A Case Report
Main Article Content
Abstract
Cervical masses are an uncommon entity in pediatrics. Phlebectasis of the internal jugular vein is a fusiform dilation of this vessel that appears as a soft, painless and compressible mass in the neck during physical effort or after the Valsalva maneuver. We describe the case of a boy with phlebectasis of the internal jugular vein. Male, white, 6 years old, born in Correia Pinto, state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. The boy’s mother went to the Basic Health Unit in his city to investigate a cervical mass perceived two weeks earlier, when he made efforts (sneezing, coughing and playing), in addition to the complaint of dysphagia during meals,
choking, dyspnea and hoarseness. There is no history of trauma, surgery or cervical pathologies. The investigation of a cervical mass begins with a detailed anamnesis and a complete physical examination, including otorhinolaryngological evaluation. Phlebectasis of the congenital internal jugular vein is a rare entity considered as a benign abnormality
that predominantly affects the right side, being more common in boys.
