Isolated craniofacial amniotic band: case report

Abstract

Introduction: The amniotic band syndrome is a rare congenital disorder caused by the entrapment of fetal parts by fibrous amniotic bands in the uterus. Objective: to describe the case of a newborn (NB) with bifrontal bone hypoplasia secondary to the amniotic band. Case description: A full-term male NB with good vitality showed craniofacial malformation in the delivery room, confirmed by computed tomography. He progressed satisfactorily with topical treatment of the malformation site and was discharged after four days of life for outpatient follow-up. He returned 10 days later to the emergency room with fever and irritability, being diagnosed with meningitis and sepsis, requiring mechanical ventilation and antibiotic therapy. After new hospitalization 17 days later due to obstructive hydrocephalus was treated with endoscopic cisternostomy of relief. At five years old presented with good psychomotor development and a reconstructive surgical scar developing properly. Discussion: It is necessary to rule out congenital cranial anomalies in the prenatal period, to choose more appropriately through the birth route and thereby reduce the risks to the newborn. This case showed that when the craniofacial amniotic band is restricted to the cranial bone the neurological prognosis may be close to normal.
