Abstract

Objective: To analyze the incidence rate ratio (IRR) of cases reported as severe acute respiratory syndrome, hospitalization and mortality due to acute respiratory diseases in children under 15 years of age in Brazil from 2009 to 2021, according to the availability of hospital beds and health professionals. Methods: Ecological study using data from the Influenza Epidemiological Surveillance Information System, SUS Hospitals, Mortality, and National Registry of Health Establishments, aggregated by Brazilian states, between January 1, 2009, and December 31, 2021. To calculate the IRR, negative binomial regression. Results: There was a decrease in the rate of hospital beds during the study period in Brazil. In the period 2010-2019, in the years 2020 and 2021, the increase in the rate of pediatricians and hospital beds was associated with a reduction in mortality. There was a reduction in the risk of hospitalization with each increase of one unit in the adult ICU/ICU bed rate. Association with an increase in hospitalization with each increase in pediatric ICU/ICU. Conclusion: There was a reduction in hospital bed rates and fewer pediatricians and physicians in the North and Northeast regions. The association between increased hospital beds and pediatricians in reducing mortality confirms that specialized care reduces deaths. The reduction in hospitalization with more beds in the adult ICU/ICU would be justified by the reduction in beds reallocated for the adult/elderly population. Children and adolescents arrived with more serious conditions requiring ICU/ICU beds.
