Abstract

Acute otitis media (AOM) is an inflammatory process of the middle ear with different characteristics, evolution, and clinical treatments. In most cases, it is associated with viral or bacterial infection of the upper airways and is directly linked with the child population. It aimed to report the case of a 5-year-old schoolboy with a history of recurrent AOM, who developed mastoiditis and ear abscess. Information was obtained through the review of the medical records, interviews with the patient’s parents, photographic record of the diagnostic methods that the patient was submitted to and his clinical evolution based on informed consent to family members through the signing of a term (TCLE) that ensures privacy, confidentiality, inclusion and representativeness to the patient and their guardians. In addition, participants may disengage and exit their participation without penalty. The case reported and the publications raised bring to light the discussion of the treatment and management of patients with this clinical condition linked to the main risk factors to improve the quality of life and correct approach to the patient.
