Data source: The data we used in this paper was provided by Medline, Lilacs and Scielo sources, including books and information by institutional sources in websites.
Data synthesis: According to the literature review, the definition of autonomy is widely variable, regarding to different areas of knowledge. The concepts based on the developmental perspective are frequently used to explain autonomy acquisition in adolescence. According to these concepts, autonomy is defined as the ability to think, feel, make decisions and establish goals based on personal moral values. In this scenario, family, social relations, conditions of health and sociocultural context are important factors which can interfere positively or
negatively in this process. The development of autonomy is a crucial element of the second decade of life.
Conclusions: It is important that health professionals who work with teenagers are familiar with these concepts, in order to stimulate the adolescents in their search for autonomy and to identify obstacles in this process, ensuring a higher quality of care for this population.
