Pre-puberty urethral prolapse: case report

Abstract

Objective: to report and discuss a case of vaginal bleeding due to urethral prolapse in which we suspected of sexual abuse. Case description: a two-year and 11-month-old child had sudden onset of severe vaginal bleeding after a period of time playing outside her home without supervision. There was suspicion of sexual abuse by the parents. She was taken to the hospital and her gynecological examination showed urethral prolapse. We resected the everted portion of her urethra, with symptom resolution. Discussion: sexual abuse should always be considered in patients with urogenital bleeding; however, this case illustrates the importance of considering other differential diagnoses. Identifying urethral prolapse in this patient made it possible not only to resolve the condition, but also to reassure the family against the suspected abuse.
