Prehospital care of the neonate: a diagnostic approach

Abstract
Objective: Prehospital care is an emergency medical care modality in which providers may be faced with any situation, at any given time, in a variety of out-of-hospital settings. Excellence in prehospital care can only be achieved if providers have standardized knowledge profiles and act accordingly during their duties. To that end, care should be systematized in accordance with established protocols and all team members should receive appropriate training. We sought to establish optimal approaches by medical directors and emergency medical service (EMS) providers to the various potential events that may prompt prehospital emergency care of the neonate, including unplanned out-of-hospital deliveries. Methods: Through a search of the PubMed database and national guidance documents, using key-words newborn and emergency. Results: Despite the low frequency of contact with neonates, EMS teams must be aware of the key conditions that affect this fragile patient population. Within this context, the present review presents an approach to prehospital care of the newborn. Conclusion: Prevalent causes and/or potential organic syndromes should be identified and appropriate treatment instituted in a timely manner.
