Abstract

Objective: to check the relationship of birth weight and gestational age about respiratory complications in neonates in a maternity in the southwestern of Goiás. Methods: we carried out a descriptive-analytic research study, retrospective, with the quantitative method, through a survey, using of hospital records, in the archives of medical services of a goiano southwest motherhood. 1,416 records were used in newborns from january to december 2013 being deleted strikethrough and incomplete records. All the collected data was organized in a spreadsheet Excel®. After preparation of the entire spread sheet, the data were transferred to a spreadsheet Statistical Package for Social Sciences (version 16.0) and processed descriptive statistical analysis. To test the correlation between variables was used Pearson correlation with the 95% confidence interval. Results: regarding the correlations made between the existence of respiratory complications and weight of newborns, gestational age and IG x peso, could be observed statistically significant correlation in all situations, which implies that for a given sample the lower the
birth weight and gestational age, the greater the likelihood of developing respiratory complications (p = 0.000 and p = 0.004, respectively). The prevalence of respiratory complications was 81.70% being the most frequent respiratory distress syndrome in 11.80% of newborns. Conclusions: was could identify that the lower the birth weight and gestational age, the greater the chance of developing respiratory complications as well as a higher ratio gesta
tional age x weight.
