Family orientation for functional activities in hemiplegic children: report of two cases

Abstract
Introdução: Hemiplegia is a multifactorial disease, and its rehabilitation depends on the functional deficit resulting from the underlying disease. In the literature, family orientation to perform functional activities in hemiplegic children is described, but its effects and repercussions need to be better understood. Objectives: To report the effects of family orientation on functional activities in hemiplegic children and to
describe the quality of life impact to patients and their caregivers. Case description: Two male participants aged 5 and 10 years, and hemiplegia in the right and left hemi-bodies, respectively, were included. In the evaluation of functionality, there was an improvement in several aspects after family orientation, which were demonstrated by better scores
on Children’s Hand-use Experience Questionnaire, Pediatric Disability Assessment Inventory, Auto Questionnaire Qualité de Vie Enfant Imagé, and the World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQOL-Abreviado). However, the score in some markers was not kept after a period of two months with the absence of family orientation. Discussion: It was found, in the evaluation and approach of two cases of hemiplegia, that family orientation resulted in benefits for the participants and their caregivers.
The maintenance of benefits, apparently, will depend on a periodic family orientation, since, after a period without this guidance, the score of some markers was reduced. The study was a report of two cases and to have power of statistical inference, other studies must be carried out with a larger sample.
