The impacts of the cultural influences of early removal of vernix caseosa and its consequences to the newborn: an integrative review
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objective: To analyze the impacts of early removal of vernix caseosa and the consequences that this can bring to the newborn (NB). Methodology: Study consists of a bibliographic review, with collection of texts through the databases of the Virtual Health Library (VHL) website. The evaluation of the texts took place through the careful reading of articles. Results: Vernix caseosa serves as an aid for the transition from intrauterine life to aerobic (extrauterine) conditions to occur in a healthy way. The NBs first bath involves beliefs and knowledge on the part of family members and the technical nursing team. The early removal of vernix can affect newborns in the first days of life, being related to the presence of changes in the epidermis and, to a small extent, in metabolism. Conclusion: The early removal of vernix caseosa is based on local cultural ideals related to impurity, however this action allows adaptation to the environment after birth to become more difficult and can cause negative consequences.
