Statistics on the prevention of accidents involving children

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to assess the level of knowledge of mothers (75%), fathers (5%) and grandparents (20%) who attend the health service clinic in Itanhangá, City of Rio de Janeiro, regarding the prevention of domestic accidents involving children and adolescents between 2 to 13 years old.
Methods: A questionnaire was answered by 20 parents over the age of 22 that were from a relatively low socioeconomic level. The purpose of the survey was to evaluate the history of domestic accidents, factors related to prevention, and also to determine the participant’s knowledge of past work accidents.
Results: It was found that, through interviews with the health service staff, that the health service officials knew little about how to avoid accidents. The potential for prevention is clearly lacking and its effects thereby remains a burden on the emergency services.
Conclusions: In conclusion, we feel that it is necessary to focus on this subject matter during the consultations. It is necessary to take this first step to inform patients of the risks in order to avoid accidents and further improve the current medical service.
