Profile of breast milk donors of the human milk bank of a federal maternity hospital in the city of Salvador, Bahia

Abstract

Objective: identify the profile according to demographic, socioeconomic and perinatal variables from the breast milk donors from the human milk bank of federal maternity, located in the city of Salvador, Bahia. Methods: this cross sectional study was conducted from January 2014 to May 2015, with the participation of 34 external breast milk donors registered with the human milk bank of federal maternity through registration forms standardized by the service and filled by the employees of the bank milk. The database collected was analysed and tabulated and posteriorly it was done the descriptive analyses. Results: the age group 2034 years was the most frequent; 64.7% had higher education; they were predominantly married or living with a partner; about 44.1% had a monthly family income greater than five minimum salaries. Most women in gilts had preterm children by cesarean birth, with adequate birth weight and carried out their prenatal appointments in private institutions. When asked about the source of information about the milk bank 35.3% claimed to have been for family and friends. Conclusions: knowing the donor’s will allow to direct the education and promotion of breast feeding, in order to increase the number
of donors and the collected milk volume.
