Abstract

Objective: to describe the socioeconomic and demographic profile of human milk donors at Instituto de Medicina Integral Professor Fernando Figueira and to determine the portion of women who were guided about breastfeeding/milk donation during prenatal in different economic classes.
Method: a cross-sectional study. The data collection was held at the BLH/CIAMA/IMIP from March to May 2015. The sample consisted of 155 donors. The data were obtained by application of a form elaborated by the researches. For data analysis we used the SPSS 13.0 software for Windows® and Excel® 2010. Results: only 57 (36.8%) women received guidance on breastfeeding / milk donation during pregnancy. Among these, 51 (89.5%) were directed by a health professional. Regarding the 94 (60.6%) women who had per capita income (PRC) ≥ 0.5 minimum wage (SM), 37 (39.4%) received guidance during pregnancy. In that group, 33 (89.2%) were directed by
a health professional. Regarding 61 (39.4%) donors who had RPC < 0.5 SM, 20 (32.8%) were oriented and 18 (90%) referred to health professionals as the source of knowledge. Conclusions: although few women are receiving guidance on breastfeeding/donation during the prenatal care, most of the women have referred healthcare professionals as the main source of knowledge. This data suggests possible importance of health care profes
sional’s guidelines and serve as a foundation so that more training is necessary to ensure the quality of information.
