Baby-Led Weaning: An Overview of its Risks and Benefits

Abstract
Introduction: Baby-led weaning is a new way of introducing food, which suggests greater participation of children in feeding, increasing their autonomy and developing motor and orofacial skills. Objective: Perform an integrative review to identify the risks and benefits involved in applying the baby-led weaning technique. Method: A literature review was carried out through the PubMed, Scielo and LILACS databases, including texts in Portuguese and
English without delimiting the period, complete studies and with themes compatible with what was researched. Results and Conclusions: The technique did not present potential risks for obesity, nutritional deficiencies or for asphyxia. The advantages represented orofacial development, autonomy and independence, socialization, self-control of appetite and greater food variability.
However, given the little evidence found, there is a need for further studies in order to identify whether the technique can be seen as the best form of food introduction.
