Comparison of pronga and nasal mask in non-invasive ventilation in prematures: a literature review

Abstract

Introdução: Ventilatory support performed in preterm infants can be invasive (through an artificial area); or non-invasive, through interfaces that preserve the physiological airway Objective: To verify the safety and effectiveness of using the nasal mask compared to the nasal prong, in relation to NIV failure, occurrence of nasal trauma,
non-invasive support time and occurrence of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). Data source: Articles published in the last ten years in the databases indexed in PubMed / Medline, SciELO, Lilacs and Cochrane were included in the study, using the main keywords and their respective descriptors in English. Summary of the findings: Five
international articles were found, comparing nasal prongs and nasal masks, showing a reduction in trauma injury in premature infants and a reduction in failure of noninvasive ventilation. Conclusion: The nasal mask is a promising alternative, as it behaves similarly to the nasal prong (in relation to vital sign parameters), or superior to this when considering nasal and facial trauma, which reduces exposure of the premature infant to painful events, considered harmful to the extrauterine development of his central nervous system.
