Abstract

Introduction: Human breast milk (LH) is the most suitable food for any newborn (NB) because of its balanced nutritional composition and its ability to be immunoprotective. It favors nutrition and immunization, besides motivating the building and strengthening of affection. Objective: To investigate the main interactions between breastfeeding and the infant intestinal microbiota, to identify the main actions of breastfeeding in infants from 0 to 2 years and to determine the relation between human milk and the infant intestinal microbiota. Methodology: This review covers some relevant results on breast milk and intestinal microbiota during the last 5 years, especially in the 0-2 year age group. Articles from the following databases were selected: VHL, SCIELO, LILACS, MEDLINE and PUBMED. According to the inclusion criteria, 25 articles were selected, among them with languages in English, Spanish, Polish and Portuguese. Results: The articles were searched in the Virtual Health Library, Scientific Electronic Library Online, International Literature in Health Sciences, Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences and PUBMED, with the keywords “Breast feeding”, “gastrointestinal microbiome”. We used articles published in the last five years, in Portuguese, Spanish, Polish and / or English, on breastfeeding and the intestinal microbiota of children. We excluded articles that did not meet the objectives of the study. After analyzing the exclusion and inclusion criteria, we selected 25 articles. Conclusion: The studies presented reinforce the already widespread idea in the scientific community about the importance of breastfeeding, being the best option among all.
