Hospitalizations for diabetes mellitus in childhood in Brazil and its regions between 2010 and 2019

Introdução: Type 1 diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease, generally from early childhood. Type 2 diabetes mellitus, more common in adults, has been increasing its incidence in children. Objective: To investigate the epidemiological profile of diabetes mellitus in children and adolescents in Brazil between 2010 and 2019. Methods: Ecological study with descriptive time-series about the hospitalizations for diabetes mellitus in Brazil and its regions from 2010 to 2019, in individuals up to 19 years old, with data available in the Hospital Information System of the Unified Health System. Results: There was an increase of 16,12% in the hospitalizations from 2010 to 2019. Northeast and Southeast regions presented the highest numbers of hospitalizations for this disease; the Northeast region
showed the greatest relative increase in the hospitalizations in this period, with a rise of 25,56%. Most of the hospitalizations (57,3%), and the highest lethality (0,74%) and mortality (11,64 per million) rates occurred in the female sex, and the highest mortality rates occurred in the North and Northeast regions: 1,09 and 0,97 per million, respectively. Conclusions: Young women (10-19 years) from the Northeast and the Southeast regions are the most affected by the disease, however more studies are necessary to better understand hospitalizations among the different groups studied.
