Coins and battery button ingested by pediatric patients during the COVID-19 pandemic: a comparison between 2019 and 2020

Abstract

Introduction: Amid the spread of coronavirus disease, children remained in their homes for extended periods, and are more susceptible to domestic accidents. Children aged one to six years are the most prone to the ingestion of foreign body, and coins are the most commonly ingested. The incidence of accidents involving button batteries has increased due to its frequent use in toys and presents corrosive properties. Objectives: The series of cases aims to report the recurrence of coin and battery ingestion, upon the current 2020 pandemic, and to compare to the number of cases in the same period of 2019. Description: The reported cases portray four children, who were consulted at the children’s emergency room between March and June 2020. Three children ingested coins and only one ingested button battery. The presented symptoms were nausea, coughing, dysphagia, sialorrhea and vomiting, with the exception being the battery ingestion case, which was asymptomatic. After the diagnosis, obtained through radiography, the coins were endoscopically retrieved, and the button battery surgically removed. Comments: The main difficulty in the diagnostic is the non-witnessed ingestion by the guardians, a situation that slows down the initiation of treatment and increases risk of complications. Pediatricians should consider the suspicion of foreign body ingestion in the presence of the reported symptoms, following up with the appropriate investigation. In addition, the alert for the prevention of child domestic accidents should always be carried out in pediatric consultations.
