Abstract

Introduction: COVID-19 in neonates may be considered light, se vere, or moderate. Objective: Describe the clinical conditions during the hospitalization of preterm newborns (PTNBs) who tested positive for COVID-19. Materials and Methods: A case study carried out in a hospital with a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), with two preterm newborns, twins, female, without any underlying pathology other than COVID-19 and prematurity, who required NICU; the information used were collected from electronic medical records. Description: The two preterm newborns were stable at birth, and underwent pre ventive continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), only one new born needed oxygen, with an inspiratory fraction of 25% oxygen for 24 hours, none of the newborns needed mechanical ventilation and both were discharged hospital 37 days after birth. There is a wide clin ical variety among newborns who tested positive for COVID-19, most of the newborns did not develop severe symptoms of the disease; however, there are reports of newborns who required mechanical ventilation and evolved to a serious clinical condition. Comments: The newborns who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 did not present significant complications; however, due to the shortage of informa tion in the literature, new descriptions and approaches to these pa tients and studies with larger samples are needed.
