Correlation between neck circumference with different antropometric parameters in children

Abstract

This study aimed to verify the correlation between neck circumference with body mass index, waist circumference, body fat and skinfolds in children. Cross-sectional study with 875 children from public schools in Volta Redonda, Brazil. Weight, height, neck circumference, waist circumference and skinfolds were measured. The diagnosis of nutritional status and risk of complications was performed based on body mass index, body fat, neck circumference and waist circumference. The median age was 8 years, and most children presented body max index eutrophy (58.2%), with no risk of metabolic complications by neck circumference (51.3%) and waist circumference (76.1%), and overweight compared to body fat (52.2%). There was a correlation
between neck circumference and body mass index (r = 0.689, p<0.005), waist circumference (r = 0.738, p <0.005), body fat (r =0.671, p <0.005) and skinfolds (r = 0.679, p <0.005). We conclude that neck circumference is an excellent measure of evaluation, and its use should be stimulated in pediatrics.
