Abstract

Objective: This study aims to compare the spirometry test between different nutritional states and the predicted reference values in a Brazilian population aged 7 to 14 years. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study, investigating findings from the pulmonary function test (spirometry) in children aged 7 years to adolescents aged 14 years. Anthropometric data and lung volumes from the examination were observed. To compare findings, individuals were grouped by sex and BMI classification. Furthermore, these findings were compared to predictive value equations. Results: 164 spirometry tests of children and adolescents were evaluated. The average age was 11.2±2.3 years, with 54.3% being boys and 53% classified as eutrophic. It was shown that obese girls have a smaller volume of FVC and VF1, and in boys a decrease in volume was observed in underweight and obese children. In both sexes, children and adolescents classified as overweight have higher FVC and FEV1 volumes. Girls, regardless of nutritional status, have FVC and FEV1 volumes lower than predicted by the literature, and in boys classified as eutrophic, this decrease is observed related to all predictive values. Conclusion: Given the different predictive values for the spirometry test, there is a need for further confirmation regarding the expected values in the test, after all, the spirometry test is an important support for clinical practice and guidance for therapy in individuals with respiratory problems.
