Hospitalizations for thyrotoxicosis in childhood in Brazil and its regions between 2010 and 2019

Abstract

Introduction: Thyrotoxicosis is a clinical manifestation caused by elevated serum levels of thyroid hormones, with Graves disease being the most prevalent cause of this condition in children. Thyrotoxicosis is marked by an acute clinical course, requiring medical support and
evaluation. Objectives: Describe the epidemiological, clinical and budgetary aspects of pediatric patients with thyrotoxicosis in Brazil between 2010 and 2019. Methodology: This was an ecological study based on secondary data obtained from DATASUS. The population
consisted of children hospitalized for thyrotoxicosis from 2010 to 2019 in Brazil. Results: There was a total of 414 admissions, 70.29% of which were urgent. Females accounted for 77.78%, while males accounted for 22.22%. The Southeast registered 217 hospitalizations
(52.42%), being also the region with the highest average cost per hospitalization (R$638.9). The highest concentration of hospitalizations occurred in the 15-19 age group. During the study period, there was a 48.15% increase in hospitalizations. Conclusion: The findings
of this study correlate with those described in previous studies. The results obtained reinforce the importance of further studies to better understand this clinical condition in the health system scenario.
